Mayor's Corner: Winter Safety Starts with All of Us

Mayor Posted on December 09, 2025

As we head into winter and the weather turns cold—gloves, coats, and brisk mornings often mean our routines take a bit longer, and travel requires a little more patience. Snow, ice, and cold are part of life in Utah, and it’s an important time for us to look out for each other.

Personal preparation is key for winter safety, and so is kindness in action. Checking in on older neighbors, families with young children, or anyone who might need an extra hand makes a real difference. If you’re already shoveling your walk or clearing a driveway, doing one or two more nearby is a simple act that means a lot. Many of our seniors take great pride in their independence, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t feel supported when conditions get tough.

Our awesome Public Works crew works tirelessly—often before dawn and on holidays—to plow, treat, and prepare our roads. Their work helps keep us safe, but each of us have a part to play. Please take a few minutes to check your tires and washer fluid, drive a little slower, and give yourself and others extra space. And remember to clear snow off your car before driving, those chunks can quickly turn into hazards for others on the road.

As we move into the holiday season, we’ll gather with family and friends, travel more, and celebrate the traditions we love. Preparedness and patience help make those moments safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

One of my favorite things about South Jordan is that you already do this. You care. You notice. You step in when someone needs help. Thank you for the kindness you show one another and for making South Jordan such a wonderful place to call home. On behalf of our city council, we wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and a safe, peaceful, and joyful holiday season for you and your families.
