[ARCHIVED] State of the City - Message from Mayor Dawn Ramsey

Dawn Ramsey and staff

Happy New Year! 2021 was another incredible year for the City of South Jordan. We had a new elementary school open, welcomed several new businesses, partnered with Salt Lake County to create a park authority, and made great progress on Bingham Creek Regional Park. We dedicated our beautiful cemetery expansion, opened Fire Station 64 with a west side police precinct and City Hall Annex, and we partnered with UDOT to construct and open the new interchange at Bangerter Highway and 10400 South. Taking the highway under will be a great benefit to residents and businesses in the area and we are proud of our ability to make that happen.

The past year has been another exercise in resilience as we have navigated the challenges of the pandemic and tried to find safe ways to do things. We had a very popular drive thru Spring Spectacular, a successful race series, and farmers market. Over the summer we had a beautiful Memorial Day event and our city’s float received the Governor’s Choice Award at the Days of 47 Parade. Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic we moved our SoJo Summerfest to September, where we were able to gather in person to bid farewell to summer. Last fall we held our Pumpkin Promenade and our Veteran’s Day Breakfast, and we kicked off the holidays with a return to our Light the Night celebration. It was wonderful to see so many of you at these events and in many other places around the community.

In 2021, we completed a workforce housing project in partnership with Ivory Homes, dedicating 9 units to be sold to public employees of the City or Jordan School District. We are proud to find innovative ways to help hard working folks and their families qualify to buy a home in the city they work in.

Last year we were awarded funding for the 9800 South Bangerter Highway project, the widening of U-111, and several other local transportation projects. By improving the north/south corridors in the City we reduce the need for everyone to travel to and from I-15, which will reduce traffic congestion going east/west.

We also welcomed the Larry H. Miller group as the new owners of Daybreak. They have been fantastic to work with and together we are planning for wise growth that includes appropriate infrastructure and economic opportunities that will benefit those in the Daybreak development and all residents of our city.

The results of the 2020 Census named South Jordan one of the 10 Fastest Growing Cities in America. This continues to be a very desirable place where people want to live. On behalf of the city council, I would like to say thank you to our heroic police officers and fire fighters, our parks and public works employees, crossing guards, recreation staff, events, engineering, planning, economic development, and everyone else on our staff who works so hard to make South Jordan the wonderful community it is. We also want to thank our volunteers: the Youth Council, Arts Council, Historical, Senior Advisory, and Architectural Review Committees, the Planning Commission, and all those who donate their time for the benefit of the City. We will continue working hard on your behalf as we maintain our high standard of service and protect the quality of life we enjoy in South Jordan, while also planning for and managing growth. It is a privilege to serve as your mayor and I appreciate the support you’ve given me and the opportunity to serve for four more years. I love this community and will continue giving my all to serving you.

– Mayor Dawn R. Ramsey
